Process

Foster Family
 Basic Foster Parent Qualifications:  

It takes a special type of person to be a successful foster parent.  Potential applicants must meet the following basic qualifications (per NAC codes) before being considered:

  • 21 years of age or older.

  • Be in good physical, mental and emotional health.

  • Must pass background checks at state, federal and local levels.

  • Have a designated bedroom in the home for a foster child.

  • Have a steady source of income and demonstrate that the monthly foster care stipend is not needed to fulfill the current household budget.

  • A  willingness to learn new parenting techniques.  These include the Together Facing the Challenge and Trauma Informed Care curriculum.  

  • A willingness to participate in Child and Family Team meetings for each child in your home.

 

 Basic Steps to Become Licensed:  

 

After an informational meeting with Maple Star, you will be given the application paperwork to begin the process toward licensure.  The license is issued by Washoe County or the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services, depending on your location.  Maple Star assists you in the process of obtaining your license.  The main steps include:

  • Complete county or state applications and pass background checks.

  • Provide 5 positive references about the character of the parents.

  • Complete a 40 hour training provided by Maple Star.

  • A home study will be completed for your home.

  • The county or state will inspect your home.

  • Receive a license for specific ages and genders of children.
